It isn’t every year that an elite quarterback prospect emerges right in Notre Dame’s backyard, but that appears to be the case in the 2030 recruiting class (let’s get crazy!).

Chicago (Ill.) Brother Rice quarterback Sam Holcomb, a high school freshman, has already been gathering attention from schools across college football. The 6-2, 200-pound signal caller is only six games into his high school career, yet programs like Colorado, Purdue, UConn, and Austin Peay have already extended offers.

A lot more are going to be on the horizon. And some massive ones.

Holcomb put on a show against Mount Carmel

Holcomb’s stock should continue to rise if he keeps performing the way he did this past week against Mount Carmel, another powerhouse from the city of Chicago. Holcomb put on an absolute show, completing 8-of-15 passes for 154 yards and two touchdown passes. He also rushed for 75 yards and two more scores on nine carries in Brother Rice’s 35-24 upset victory.

Through six games this season, Holcomb has completed 46-of-65 passes for 737 yards and 12 touchdown passes. The freshman quarterback has also completed nearly 71 percent of his passes without throwing a single interception. He has rushed the ball 25 times for 290 yards and six more scores on the ground.

Those are remarkable numbers for a player his age.

The Notre Dame connection at Brother Rice

Holcomb is currently teammates with 2027 Notre Dame defensive tackle commit Brayden Parks, as well as top 2028 defensive end target Kameon McGee, who is considered one of the top overall players in his class. Brother Rice is beginning to be a school of real importance for Notre Dame recruiting, both in the 2027 class and into the future.

If you follow Notre Dame recruiting over the years under head coach Marcus Freeman, or even before his tenure, the Fighting Irish don’t typically hand out offers to true freshmen. That has historically been the case until the staff gets a chance to see prospects on campus in person and really has an opportunity to evaluate them physically.

There is no indication whether Notre Dame is going to make a move for Holcomb anytime soon.

Why Notre Dame should get ahead of the curve

If you ask me, they absolutely should.

This is a kid with rare talent for a player his age, and he is playing his high school football just 90 minutes from campus. There’s no guarantee that if Notre Dame offered tomorrow, the Fighting Irish would become the instant favorite for Holcomb. Being ahead of the curve for a local talent of this level should always be a point of emphasis.

Holcomb is already getting looked at by some of the top schools in the country, and you can bet that he will have a national offer list before too long. Seeing him put out the performance he did against 2027 Notre Dame commit Roman Igwebuike should tell the full story. There’s a kid who is extremely talented and far exceeding the expectations that anyone should have for a high school freshman.

Keep your eye on Holcomb, who appears to be an early favorite to be one of the top signal callers in the 2030 recruiting class.
