Update: Find Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s postgame comments on Thornton’s injury here.
Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyquan Thornton was having the game of his life against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 4. Now, his 2026 NFL season may be over.
Thornton caught 4 passes for 56 yards on 7 targets and scored two touchdowns before his final play in the 4th quarter. The Raiders went Cover 0 on third down. Patrick Mahomes threw a rocket to Tyquan Thornton in 1-on-1 coverage. He caught the ball for a 55-yard gain before a Las Vegas defender dragged him down.
Thornton stood up to celebrate, but quickly realized he had suffered a serious ankle injury. The cart came out for Thornton, the stadium went silent, and the Chiefs’ training staff applied an air cast to Thornton’s ankle. Then, they carted a somber-looking Thornton back to the locker room.
The Chiefs had already lost Rashee Rice for the day with a hamstring injury. Thornton’s injury looks like it will result in a longer-term, potentially season-ending absence.
Chiefs are left with just four active receivers for the remainder of Week 4 vs. the Raiders
With Thornton and Rice out, the Chiefs had only four active receivers for Week 4. Xavier Worthy and Nikko Remigio are Kansas City’s most veteran players. They also have rookie WR Cyrus Allen and second-year WR Jalen Royals active for Sunday’s game. Thankfully, a special teams play helped the Chiefs take a 30-19 lead with 3 minutes to go, after two Kenneth Walker touchdowns.
Looking ahead, the Chiefs have WRs Andrew Armstrong and Omari Evans on the practice squad. Many people will connect Kansas City to free agent WR Tyreek Hill after this injury to Thornton.
Thornton finished the Week 4 game vs. the Raiders with a team-leading five receptions for 111 receiving yards and two touchdowns. We’ll have more on Thornton’s status after the conclusion of the Week 4 game.
