Sportsbook makes it clear which Miami Hurricane they favor as the early leading Heisman Trophy candidate
Miami has two strong candidates for college football’s biggest individual prize.
We’re only two full weeks into the college football season, but there have already been a number of outstanding performances across college football. Perhaps no place has lit up the scoreboard like the Miami Hurricanes thus far.
Miami has started off red hot, toppling Stanford 45-6 on the West Coast before flattening Florida A&M 77-7 at home on a short week. Sure, that’s not top tier competition — although folks have conveniently forgotten that Hawaii was a Group of Six playoff sweetheart in the preseason, and Stanford beat them in Week 0 37-27. But Miami did what good teams are supposed to do: put a hurting on them. And with staggering leads by halftime in both games, that’s been the case.
Even so, in just fractions of two football games, Miami Hurricanes QB Darian Mensah and WR Malachi Toney have clearly been two of the best players in college football. Mensah was 17/20 passing for 401 yards and five touchdowns against Stanford over two and a half quarters. Toney set the Miami program record with 234 receiving yards against the Cardinal and earned praise from players like former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro Dez Bryant.
And that’s why both have gotten plenty of Heisman Trophy talk early in the season. But which is the more likely winner of the two? DraftKings Sportsbook has updated their Heisman Trophy odds, and Mensah is the national leader at +500. Toney is tied for fifth at +1300.

It’s logical that Mensah would get top billing. After all, the award is primarily a quarterback award, particularly in recent years. And the Hurricanes’ offense looks set to explode this year with Mensah in command.
Wide receivers often face an uphill battle, as their success is often tangential to that of their quarterbacks, and in this case, Mensah tops the list ahead of Toney. But Toney is one of those rare exceptions where he can make big plays and potential “Heisman moments” on his own. Toney returns punts, plays quarterback, and runs the ball, so he can change the game in ways almost no other receiver in the country can.
We’ll see if both standouts can continue their early season success on Friday night against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
