Notre Dame football gets over an early recruiting hurdle for one of the top quarterbacks in the country
Notre Dame football is trending early for one of the top quarterbacks in the country. The Irish get past an important early recruiting hurdle.
With 2027 Vero Beach (Fla) High School quarterback Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV now committed to Notre Dame, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish can now set their sights on the 2028 recruiting class and some of its top signal callers. That includes Alexander City (Ala.) Benjamin Russell, four-star quarterback, Kingston Preyear, who was offered by the Irish recently.
The four-star signal caller recently visited South Bend and came out of that unofficial visit with a high opinion of Notre Dame. It appears that Freeman and Co. really sold that potential fit, quickly vaulting near the top of the list for the Alabama native. Preyear put out an early top-six schools list over the last couple of days, and the Fighting Irish were on it.
Notre Dame was joined by Alabama, Florida, Clemson, Auburn, and Vanderbilt in that top group.
It is still very early in the recruitment for Preyear, but the fact that Notre Dame is the only Northern program in that top group is a great sign. The Irish staff also offered 2028 Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage quarterback Neimann Lawrence recently, so the Irish are taking their shots at two of the top quarterbacks from SEC country. The program isn’t shying away from those types of recruiting battles.
With how well Notre Dame has been recruiting the quarterback position in recent years, it is hard to bet against them for a recruit that they want. Preyear clearly has their attention early, and he, so far, has reciprocated that interest.
Kingston Preyear’s recruiting background
Preyear is considered to be a four-star and a top-75 player by both 247 Sports and On3, while ESPN has not yet ranked him. In the 247 Sports Composite rankings, Preyear currently ranks as the No. 53 overall player, the No. 4 quarterback, and the No. 3 player from the state of Alabama for the 2028 recruiting class.
Like those rankings, the offer list for Preyear is also extremely impressive early. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida State, Auburn, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Colorado, Houston, Arizona, and Purdue, amongst others. That list promises to continue expanding heading into his junior season.
As a sophomore this past season, Preyear put together a tremendous season for Benjamin Russell. In 14 games, the 6-3, 195-pound passer managed to throw for 3,026 yards and 34 touchdowns. He also added another 518 yards and two scores as a runner, while throwing just five interceptions.
