Many expected Notre Dame football to beat the Florida State Seminoles this past Saturday, and decisively. The Irish did just that and a whole lot more, coming out with a 52-3 victory. Both the offense and defense were impressive in this contest, with several players standing out.
The final touchdown of the day was from sophomore safety Luke Talich, who intercepted a pass and took it back for a touchdown. The talented defender read the play perfectly, jumping in front of the pass, and outraced Florida State quarterback Block Glenn to the end zone.
Talich is a tremendous story, and football player. As a part of the 2023 recruiting class, the Wyoming native opted for the Irish as a walk-on despite holding several scholarship offers, including Utah, Washington State, and Oregon State among others. The 6-4, 211-pound safety quickly earned a scholarship his first year on campus.
To continue the great story, Talich accomplished something that we have never seen anyone do in the blue and gold on Saturday. He became the first player from the state of Wyoming to record a touchdown for Notre Dame in their history.
In fact, Talich became only the second player from the state to ever touch the football for the Irish. He joined former running back Steve Dover, who recorded three carries during the 1977 season.
Notre Dame football is a program that is a national brand. They attract talented players and students from all across the country, with Talich being another tremendous example of it. He is also another instance of a huge recruiting victory for head coach Marcus Freeman. Getting a talented player like Talich to bypass initial scholarship opportunities to come be a walk-on can’t be understated how big of a victory it was.
