It’s almost NFL Schedule Day! The league will announce the official schedule for the 2022 season on Thursday night at 7 p.m. CT. Some key match-ups have already been revealed, such as the Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers duel confirmed for Week 10.
The schedule reveal is always fun for the Cowboys since they remain America’s Team and continue to dominate TV ratings. Regardless of season expectations, it’s a rule of thumb that they will get several primetime match-ups.
This year, in particular, we’re wondering if the Cowboys can get back-to-back appearances in the NFL Kickoff?
After facing the Tampa Bay Buccanneers in an epic showdown to open the 2021 season, the Cowboys’ 2022 opponents’ list includes a trip to SoFi Stadium to face the defending Super Bowl Champions.
The Los Angeles Rams should be hosting the NFL Kickoff on Thursday Night and the Cowboys make sense first and foremost because of the ratings. Not to mention, Dallas was a 12-win team last year and should remain highly competitive this season.
The Rams are facing plenty of Kickoff-worthy opponents that could get the nod, though. They get home games versus:
- San Francisco 49ers, a potential NFC Championship Game rematch.
- Buffalo Bills, everyone was left wanting more Josh Allen.
- Denver Broncos would’ve made sense with Russell Wilson debuting in Denver but this has been confirmed as a Christmas Day clash.
Maurice Jones-Drew suggested on NFL.com that the Rams face the Bucs to kick things off, but it seems highly improbable the Rams play in Week 1 as a road team.
If I was in charge of scheduling the games, I wouldn’t be convinced of penciling in 49ers-Rams to open the season. Not knowing what Trey Lance will look like in Week 1 (or if he starts at all) would be enough to give me pause.
Bills at Rams would probably be the favorite as both teams have cemented themselves among the top contenders in the NFL and could provide an early AFC-NFC bout to market as a “potential Super Bowl preview.”
Ratings remain king, however, and I can’t rule out the Cowboys playing the Rams in Week 1.
So far, Dallas’ trip to Green Bay has been the only game revealed on the Cowboys’ schedule. There have been whispers of a Thanksgiving match-up between the Cowboys and the Bengals, which would rule out another tasty option for Week 1.
That alongside the Broncos-Rams game being confirmed for Christmas Day could give us a hint it’s either the Rams or an NFC East opponent for Dallas to open the season. In that case, the Philadelphia Eagles could make the most sense as they’re expected to be the biggest threat to the Cowboys’ division title.
As for the Rams, these hints could narrow it down to the Cowboys and the Bills.
Other big game candidates for the Cowboys’ Week 1 include the Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Indianapolis Colts.
