Jauan Jennings looked like he was taking a shot at his former team, but the truth ended up being a very different story
Former Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Jauan Jennings was at the center of an odd story last week.
Longtime NFL insider Jay Glazer reported last week that former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings was nearly traded from the Minnesota Vikings to the San Francisco 49ers.
Glazer said the deal didn’t happen because Jennings, who started his career with the 49ers, didn’t want to get on a FaceTime call with San Francisco’s front office.
At first, it looked like Jennings was still miffed that he wasn’t re-signed by the 49ers last spring.
But that’s not what actually happened.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan explained what went down this week, and it sounds like there’s no bad blood between Jennings and his old team.
“We love Jauan,” said Shanahan. “We have such a good relationship with Jauan and know him real well, and we didn’t want to do it without talking to him first. So we had to agree on some things to at least make it close enough to be able to talk to him.
“And then when we got on a FaceTime call with JJ, it went well. It was awesome. We talked about a lot of stuff, and he ended up saying that he was happy with where he was. It wasn’t just like a definite no at first, but he was like, ‘Man, Kyle, I’m pretty happy here, and liking stuff.’ And when I heard the way he talked and where we’re at, I agreed with him. So, it was a good conversation and something that was possible, but that’s why it didn’t go down.”
The Jennings/49ers non-story is another reminder that things in sports aren’t always as they seem.
