‘You wear black to a funeral’ – Oklahoma’s Brent Venables gets real on the environment for Dark Mode at Neyland Stadium
Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables had never been in Neyland Stadium before the Sooners’ win against Tennessee this past Saturday.
Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables, despite being in college football as a player or coach since 1989, had never been to Neyland Stadium before this past weekend’s game against the Tennessee Vols.
Venables said during Sooner Football with Brent Venables that the experience was even better than he thought it would be.
“I’d never been to Neyland Stadium,” said Venables. “And it was even better than I thought it would be. I certainly know a lot of people that worked there. The pageantry and the theatrics and man, the surface — the field was like a movie set when I walked in there. That’s really what it felt like to me. The Coliseum effect.
“I’m smiling only because you’re going into enemy territory, and they’re having the blackout (Dark Mode). In our locker room, we’re talking about having a funeral. You wear black to a funeral, and it’ll be somebody’s funeral at the end of the night.”
Venables and his team certainly channeled the energy that Neyland provided in the right way.
And there was indeed a funeral — for Tennessee’s College Football Playoff hopes — at the end of the night.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer loved the atmosphere at Neyland Stadium
Venables wasn’t the only Sooner who was impressed by the atmosphere at Neyland Stadium.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer also had some positive things to say about the environment at Tennessee.
“It’s an amazing environment,” said Mateer. “Everybody knows that. It was awesome. Being able to come out on top, that doesn’t happen a whole lot in this stadium. So the fact that we did was pretty cool.”
It seems clear that Oklahoma’s players and coaches have a ton of respect for Neyland Stadium. It’s also clear that the Sooners knew how to use the energy that Neyland brought and make it work in their favor.
