Peyton Manning was the subject of an interesting NFL rumor earlier this month.

Last week, shortly after the Indianapolis Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard, longtime sports talk host Dan Patrick said on his show that he received information stating that Manning could be a potential option to replace Ballard.

“I just got this information,” said Dan Patrick during his show last Monday. “The Colts’ first call will be or has been to Peyton Manning. The call will not only get names and suggestions, but the call will explore whether or not Peyton would be interested in being a general manager for the Colts as the entry point. That would include ownership interest in the Colts. This would be the first major hire by Jim Irsay’s sisters, the next generation. So now you have an opportunity to put Peyton back in Indy as a GM and part owner, and he gets to pick his quarterback. So now all of a sudden, the community is going to love this. The league would love this. Would Peyton love this?

“So, that’s the information I just got. I don’t know if an offer (was extended). I’m sure that the Irsay sisters reached out to Peyton. I would expect that to happen…I brought this up to the late Jim Irsay a couple of years ago. I said, ‘Hey, would you ever think about Peyton as a part owner?’ And he wasn’t interested in selling anything — not even to Peyton. Now it’s different.”

Manning would be an interesting choice to be the Colts’ general manager. He’s a Hall of Famer, but he’s never worked in a front office before. Still, he knows the game as well as anyone, and he knows what kind of roster it takes to win a championship.

It doesn’t look like Manning, though, is going to be a candidate to replace Ballard in Indy.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that Manning is not expected to be a candidate for the Colts’ general manager job.

“Peyton Manning has many jobs — Omaha Productions, the ‘ManningCast,’ commercial pitchman — but he is not expected to add Indianapolis Colts general manager to his list of titles and responsibilities, league sources told ESPN,” reported Schefter. “The Colts have not approached Manning about their vacant GM job nor would the Hall of Fame quarterback be expected to be interested in the position, sources said. Manning has not trained or aspired to become an NFL general manager, not with all that he has going on in his life.”

Manning’s son, Marshall, is a freshman at Baylor School in Chattanooga, so it’s not a surprise that he’s not interested in the job at this time.
