Josh Heupel and Tennessee put a cherry on top of a big month for the program
Tennessee added another in-state ballcarrier to its growing 2027 class on Wednesday night.
It’s been a very good month for the Tennessee Vols future on the football field. Among their additions to their 2027 recruiting class, Josh Heupel secured the biggest fish in the pond they were fishing in, landing the commitment of five-star Chattanooga Baylor running back David Gabriel Georges over Ohio State back on July 22.
But Heupel and running backs coach De’Rail Sims were not done yet. Not by a long stretch. On Wednesday evening, Martin, Tennessee (Westview) RB Asa Barnes committed to Tennessee over Arkansas, USC, and Florida State.

Barnes isn’t a player who’s gotten a ton of love from the recruiting services. He checks in as the No. 36 running back and No. 22 player in the state of Tennessee for 2027.
That’s not headliner stuff or a ranking that’s going to raise eyebrows. However, the interest from notable programs and offer list is undeniable. Beyond his finalists, he held offers from Ohio State, Ole Miss, Alabama, Louisville, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech.
Gabriel Georges will be the headliner, given the elite talents he possesses and the investment Tennessee is making in him. But Barnes gives Heupel another young and talented option to work into his backfield rotation. And even with DGG in the building, Heupel will certainly do what he’s done to date, and that’s use a number of backs to keep them fresh.
Tennessee now has 19 commitments in their 2027 class.
