The Cleveland Browns bounced back in Week 2 with an impressive win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a rough loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the opener. 

It was a needed victory for the Browns, and rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston led the way as the big playmaker in Cleveland. Boston caught five passes for 95 yards, including a 55-yard catch-and-run touchdown that highlighted Cleveland’s new-look passing attack.

Through two games, though, one thing has become apparent: wide receiver Jerry Jeudy’s role in the Browns‘ offense looks diminished.

Jerry Jeudy’s early-season numbers paint a clear picture, Todd Monken comments on it

Jeudy was targeted just once against the Buccaneers and did not record a catch. In the Week 1 loss to the Jaguars, Jeudy caught just two passes for 26 yards. The Browns’ investment in Boston and first-round draft pick rookie KC Concepcion has clearly pushed Jeudy down the depth chart in terms of wide receivers Cleveland is going to utilize the most. Jeudy is now a secondary option in the offense.

Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken was asked about the veteran wide receiver following the win over the Buccaneers.

“The moment that Jerry gets more targets, you’re all going to be asking me why Harold isn’t, or why isn’t KC, there’s only one football,” Monken said. “The opportunities arose for all of those guys because we were struggling to run the football as effectively as we needed to. And when that rises and we’re better at that, then Quinshon’s going to have more carries, right, and that’s going to be less opportunities for the outside guys. And Jerry’s opportunities will come. It’s just like I said, a little bit by game plan and others, that the ball just didn’t find him.”

There’s a bit of coach speak in those comments. Monken is saying that Jeudy isn’t getting the ball a lot right now, and that could change as game plans shift week by week. While that may be true, it’s still apparent that Boston and Concepcion are the Browns’ two top wide receivers, which is a change in Cleveland for Jeudy. When you factor in a third pass catcher, second-year tight end Harold Fannin Jr. is in the guy.

The Browns should explore trading Jeudy if they can. However, he’s not a bad option as a secondary receiving target, as long as he’s bought into what Cleveland is doing.
