Latest practice footage shows how Cowboys CB Shavon Revel Jr. can flip position group from question mark to true strength
The Dallas Cowboys defense should be improved, but a cornerback room with no proven answers is a serious concern. Based on what we’re seeing from Shavon Revel Jr., though, hope exists for him to be the hero.
The truth is the Dallas Cowboys’ efforts to overhaul the defense will fall short if the cornerback position doesn’t work out. Going into training camp, there are several question marks surrounding the group made up by DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel Jr., and others.
If we’re talking about the floor of the group, the most important question is if Bland will be all healed up after another foot surgery (the second in two years). But if we’re talking about upside, none matters as much as how Revel Jr. will play in Year 2?
The latest footage is a sign that should encourage the Cowboys.
Revel Jr. looks great ahead of Cowboys training camp
Cowboys content creator Law Nation posted a video of Revel Jr. training and showing off how healthy he looks. In the video, which you can see below, Revel Jr. changes directions at full speed and plants both legs. You can also see him accelerating with short bursts of speed.
Evidence of the injury that caused him to fall to the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft is nowhere to be found. That includes his knee brace, which he reportedly didn’t wear during Cowboys minicamp, either.
Speaking of minicamp, this isn’t the first indicator we get on Revel Jr. being much healthier than last year. According to insider Patrik Walker, the young cornerback was “moving extremely well” during the Cowboys offseason program.
For him to be this healthy at this stage of the offseason is major. It means his preparation ahead of the season can focus on football, not rehab. In a way, this will be Revel Jr.’s first full training camp. Factor in Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker coming from a defensive backs background, and this can be a very meaningful camp for Revel Jr.
Revel Jr. brings true upside to the Cowboys CB room
Obviously, Revel Jr. has proven nothing at the NFL level. But it’s impossible to not get excited about his potential. Remember, Revel Jr. was seen by the NFL world as a first-round talent that dropped because of his injury. The Cowboys paid the price by getting only seven games out of his rookie year.
Now it’s time to get those dividends.
Revel Jr. has the height, weight, and speed to be a true CB1 in the NFL. In college, he excelled in man coverage thanks to his speed and physicality.
The best case scenario for the Cowboys is for him to emerge as that in Year 2 of his career. Though Parker is expected to call a lot of zone coverage in his first year running the Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles heavily relied in man coverage in 2025. Of course, they had the players to run it.
If Revel Jr. takes that leap now that he’s healthy, the Cowboys could use him to shut down one side of the field, opening up plenty of possibilities for Parker in the drawing board.
