The Denver Broncos made a strong statement about offensive coordinator Davis Webb before Week 2 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars
Davis Webb had a tough debut as the Denver Broncos’ play-caller last week against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Davis Webb’s debut as the Denver Broncos’ play-caller didn’t go very well in Week 1.
The Broncos scored just 10 points in a 31-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
One NFL executive suggested after the poor showing against the Chiefs that it could be tough for Denver head coach Sean Payton to “stick with” letting Webb call plays.
“I think Sean’s play calling last year was unbelievable,” said the executive to The Athletic. “He is such an elite play caller. Davis is a good dude, but he’s 31 and never called plays before. That’s going to be an interesting situation. They have a helluva schedule. They have a tough one against Jacksonville. If they come out of the gates slowly, it’s gonna be hard for Sean to stick with this. That would get very messy.”
For now, though, it sounds like the Broncos have no plans to make any changes as the team expressed confidence in Webb before their Week 2 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“The Denver Broncos maintain a ‘high level of confidence and comfort’ in Davis Webb as their offensive play-caller, a team source told ESPN,” reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday morning. “… Sean Payton continues to support Webb and stand by the first-year offensive coordinator, believing he will be a successful play-caller.”
That should put any whispers of a change to bed.
But if the Broncos continue to struggle offensively, this will be something to watch as it wouldn’t be a surprise if Payton took play-calling duties back from Webb. But for now, that’s clearly something Payton doesn’t want to do.
