Is there a scarier sight for the Denver Broncos than Patrick Surtain limping off the field with an injury? I’m not sure there is. And that’s what they just witnessed.

Denver’s star cornerback went down with a non-contact injury late in the first half against the San Francisco 49ers, on a 2-minute drive right before the break. The CBS broadcast showed Surtain walking off the field with trainers. Surtain has officially been listed as questionable to return with an ankle injury.

Look, any time a player goes down without contact, your stomach drops. Those are the injuries that tend to look the worst, and this one looked the part.

What happened on the play

Surtain was playing a deep third on the bottom half of the screen. 49ers wide receiver Jacob Cowling pushed Surtain’s cushion in his stem, forcing the Broncos corner to react to the vertical threat.

That’s when it happened. Surtain came up gimpy on his right leg, and it appeared he was holding his ankle on the field before he was helped off. Nobody hit him. Nobody rolled up on his legs. It was a routine rep in coverage, the kind he takes dozens of times a game, and that’s exactly what makes it so concerning.

Non-contact injuries are the ones that keep coaches and trainers up at night. A collision gives you an obvious explanation. A cornerback planting and coming up hobbled on his own leaves a lot more questions than answers. Denver’s secondary will have to hold strong against Mike Evans and Co.

Why this matters for the Broncos defense

Everyone knows the caliber of player that Pat Surtain is for the Broncos. He often blankets his half of the field. Without him, Denver’s defense drastically changes. Here’s additional insight from NFL Contributor Rob Gregson:

“If Patrick Surtain’s injury is serious, it will be felt in a similar, if not worse, way than Bo Nix’s ankle injury last season in terms of team impact. Everyone knows the accolades that Surtain possesses in terms of Pro Bowls, All-Pro selections, and his DPOY status, but few players in the league are as important on a down-to-down basis as Surtain. And no one is as important as he is on that Denver Defense.

Vance Joseph has been so successful due in part to the fact that, with Surtain, he can just plug and play him on one side of the field, while running different coverages with Riley Moss and Co. on the other side. He’s that big of a game changer.

Jahdae Barron replaces Surtain, and while the Broncos may be excited about his potential, the complexion of that scheme in Denver turns upside down with Barron as opposed to PS2. The Broncos will be making major adjustments if Surtain misses significant time.”

What comes next for Surtain

Obviously, the first question is whether he returns for the second half, and right now nobody outside that medical tent has an answer. The Broncos have listed him as questionable with an ankle injury, so the wait is on.

If this turns out to be an ankle issue that lingers, the Broncos could be without their top cornerback for more than just the rest of this game. The fact that he walked off with trainers instead of leaving on a cart is at least something to hold onto. It’s not a guarantee of anything, but it’s a better visual than the alternative.

Here’s my take: The Broncos can survive a half without Surtain if need be. What they can’t afford is a long stretch without the best player on their defense, especially with how much of their identity runs through him. The next update on Surtain is going to say a lot about where this defense goes from here.
