Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy suffered an ankle injury against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday afternoon when getting hit multiple times in the legs. It was a combination of holding the ball too long and poor offensive line play.

McCarthy said after the game that he was fine, and he took the majority of snaps with the second team. After he and Carson Wentz split reps on Tuesday, many were questioning if McCarthy was losing ground with the QB2 job.

Kevin O’Connell updates J.J. McCarthy’s injury status

When head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke to the media on Wednesday, he gave an update on McCarthy’s health, including giving him a rest day.

“We’re going to give him a rest day today, just to see if we can kind of put the ankle [injury] behind him a little bit,” said O’Connell.

It makes sense to not put too much stress on the injured ankle, which is smart after two days of practice. O’Connell is still hopeful that McCarthy can end up playing on Friday night.

“We split the reps yesterday just to not overload them, and with hopes of him being able to start this final preseason game,” said O’Connell. “And we’ll work off of that if we can feel good about getting him those really important reps. I’ll keep you guys posted regarding just the game itself.”

If McCarthy does start the preseason game, it will be interesting how long he ends up playing. However long that is could tell us more about his future with the Vikings.
