Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid gives latest injury updates on Josh Simmons, Chamarri Conner after Week 3 win vs. Miami Dolphins
No new injuries from Week 3 to speak of, but Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid had fresh injury updates on Josh Simmons and Chamarri Conner. Plus, a quip about Patrick Mahomes’ back.
The Kansas City Chiefs escaped Hard Rock Stadium without any new injuries, but a pair of lingering situations from the first 3 weeks of the season remain worth watching ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid addressed the media on Monday following the team’s Week 3 win against the Miami Dolphins. Reid provided his typical Monday injury updates, though he didn’t have much new information on players who were banged up during the game.
“As far as the injury part goes, I think we came out pretty clean,” Reid said. “So that’s a that’s also a positive.”
The Chiefs escaped the road victory relatively unscathed, a welcome development for a team dealing with a pair of lingering injuries through the first three weeks of the 2026 NFL season. Despite no new injuries to speak of coming out of Week 3’s win over Miami, Reid did touch on a pair of situations the Chiefs have been managing since the season began.
Josh Simmons’ status for Week 4 remains a mystery
Asked about offensive lineman Josh Simmons and his status after the second-year left tackle missed the first three games of the 2026 NFL season with a back injury, Reid seemed a little amused by the inquiry.
“I’ll tell you what,” Reid began. “I will let you guys know when Josh (Simmons) is coming back. I’ll be the first to tell you. So we’ll just see how that all works out.”
Chiefs fans want to know whether Simmons will make his debut in Week 4, mainly because if he doesn’t, the team will have missed a chance to place him on injured reserve. NFL rules require players placed on injured reserve to miss at least four weeks before they can return to practice, be designated to return, and play in a game.
The big thing to remember is that Reid has no reason to tip his hand here until he has to. He can maintain a preparatory advantage if he keeps Simmons’ status close to the vest. If the Raiders spend their first two days of the week looking at tape and preparing for offensive tackle Kahlil Benson, it might put them behind the eight ball when it comes to preparing for Simmons.
Whether he returns this week or not, the Chiefs are at a disadvantage without Simmons on the field. That’s especially the case on the road. In his first road start in Week 3 against the Dolphins, Benson had his toughest week yet. It was challenging holding against opposing pass rushers. He allowed three QB hits on 29 pass-blocking snaps, per PFF.
Things are looking good for Chiefs SS Chamarri Conner to make his return vs. the Raiders
Fourth-year safety Chamari Conner was listed as doubtful for the Week 3 game after participating in a limited capacity in practice all week. He was ruled out with his knee injury ahead of the game. What will his status and practice participation look like during the week leading up to Week 4 against the Raiders? According to Reid, Conner has a good chance of returning on Sunday.
“Yeah, so he practiced last week, and he’ll get going this week, too,” Reid said. “So there’s a good chance he’ll be out there. We’ll just see how the week goes, but it looks like it’ll be a pretty decent chance.”
It’s important to remember that Conner has spent the offseason strictly playing the safety position, as opposed to splitting time at the slot position as frequently. Heading into this year, Conner had a strong training camp, but the injury has been a setback. It remains to be seen how he bounces back. It’s hard not to believe his return will positively impact the defense, even if it means fewer snaps for a player like Jaden Hicks.
Brutal hit on Patrick Mahomes in Week 3 left QB no worse for wear
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes took a big hit during Week 3’s game against Miami.
Dolphins EDGE Chop Robinson hit Mahomes at the Kansas City 5-yard line, and the brutal collision drew a roughing-the-passer penalty. The NFL’s body-weight rule was the primary reason for the flag. Mahomes was seen on the broadcast holding his lower back after the play, but he didn’t leave the game and didn’t seem worse for wear.
“No, he got me,” Mahomes said. “He got me for sure pretty good. But that’s part of playing football. They brought a good stunt with the d-line. I tried to get the ball out of my hand. When you throw the ball, you’re exposed, and he got me pretty solid. But I was able to bounce back up there, and we went out there and finished that drive.”
Reid confirmed on Monday that Mahomes isn’t dealing with any injury related to the hit, though he might need to make an appointment at the chiropractor’s office soon.
“Yeah, I think it was more than a chiropractor could do,” Reid said. “So I think every bone in his body cracked on that one, but he got back up and kept firing.”
