The Kansas City Chiefs saw first-round draft pick cornerback Mansoor Delane shed his yellow non-contact jersey for the first time at training camp.

This comes on Day 14 of training camp practice, with just one more session before the team’s preseason Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams. Delane has been dealing with a shoulder blade injury, one the team has been cautious about. They’ve avoided any sort of contact during team drills while Delane has been a partial participant in one-on-ones, seven-on-seven drills, and individual work.

Thursday’s training camp practice is a padless 10-10-10 session after three consecutive days of padded practices. Delane still won’t be tackling or doing any of the things that typically accompany a padded training camp practice. However, this is a positive step forward in his recovery.

Kansas City Chiefs CB Mansoor Delane on track to make his return before Week 1 of the regular season

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said earlier this week that the team expected Delane to be fully cleared to participate in practice within about a week’s time. This does not necessarily signal that Delane will participate in the preseason Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams, but it doesn’t rule out the possibility either.

The big thing here is that the rookie is making progress toward full clearance, which in turn will give him an opportunity to get some padded practices in and potentially some preseason action ahead of the regular season.

Kansas City defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said he’s a long way from naming any starters at cornerback. He still needs to see L’Jarius Sneed and Delane in more action as both recover from injuries.
