Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 6 practice squad elevations give them the wide reinforcements they need vs. Los Angeles Chargers
The Kansas City Chiefs have elevated WR Andrew Armstrong & WR Justin Watson for Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Kansas City Chiefs officially elevated players from the practice squad ahead of Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chiefs had one specific need this week from their practice squad elevations. Tyquan Thornton is on IR, and Rashee Rice is ruled out for Week 6. That left only four wide receivers available on the 53-man roster: Xavier Worthy, Jalen Royals, Cyrus Allen, and Nikko Remigio.
Naturally, the team’s practice squad elevations focused on reinforcing depth at wide receiver. The team elevated WRs Andrew Armstrong and Justin Watson from the practice squad to the 53-man roster for the Week 6 AFC West showdown.
Here’s a quick reminder of the league’s practice squad elevation rules.
Practice Squad Elevation Rules
NFL clubs can elevate up to two players per week without signing them to the 53-man roster. This temporarily expands 53-man rosters to up to 55 players, but it does not expand game-day roster limits (48).
- Players can only receive 3 standard elevations per season.
- Following the game, players automatically revert to the practice squad.
- Practice squad elevations reset for the postseason.
Kansas City Chiefs elevate Andrew Armstrong and Justin Watson from the practice squad
As I expected, the Chiefs elevated WR Andrew Armstrong from the practice squad for Week 6. While Omari Evans might seem like a better fit for Tyquan Thornton’s role, Armstrong made a strong case for the 53-man roster during training camp and the preseason. He led the team in the preseason with 7 receptions for 85 yards. The 6-foot-4 and 210-pound wideout immediately improves the team’s perimeter blocking and gives Patrick Mahomes a big red-zone target.
The Chiefs elevated Justin Watson from the practice squad just one week after the veteran returned to Kansas City. He previously played the Tyquan Thornton role, recording 64 receptions for 1,064 yards and 7 touchdowns from 2022-2024. He’s coming off an Achilles injury; however, he was a verifiable deep threat in Kansas City, averaging 16.6 yards per reception in his three prior seasons with the team.
These two players will likely bolster the trio of Xavier Worthy, Jalen Royals, and Cyrus Allen, who are expected to start at wide receiver on Sunday.
