The Kansas City Chiefs bringing a special guest to Arrowhead Stadium to bang the drum right before kickoff has become a tradition for every home game.

Former Chiefs S Tyrann Mathieu to be drum honoree during 2025 home opener

In their 2025 home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Tyrann Mathieu will serve as the drum honoree on the GEHA Drum Deck.

Just last week, Mathieu made his media debut as he was featured as an in-studio analyst for the Chiefs’ Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on YouTube. After spending the final three years of his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, Mathieu retired just before the start of training camp over the summer.

Mathieu was instrumental in helping the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIV during the 2019 season. It was his first year in Kansas City, along with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Together, they helped changed the identity of the defense. Mathieu was named First-Team All-Pro that year as he helped the Chiefs’ pass defense shoot up from 31st in 2018 to eighth in 2019.

Throughout his three-year stint with K.C., Mathieu recorded recording 213 total tackles, 13 interceptions, 27 passes defensed, three sacks, and two defensive touchdowns. K.C. had to make a tough financial decision to part ways with Mathieu after the 2021 season, but his influence is still felt today

Mathieu was drafted by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent five years in Arizona, then headed over to Houston for a one-year stint with the Texans.

Mathieu played 12 years in the NFL overall, and was named an All-Pro four times and a Pro Bowler three times. He is also a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team, and the 2013 PFWA All-Rookie Team. Mathieu will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2030.
