Two weeks into the 2026 season, that gamble looks like a masterstroke. Walker has been a nightmare for opposing defenses, and his early-season production is providing exactly the kind of boost Kansas City needed as quarterback Patrick Mahomes works his way back from a season-ending injury suffered last year. But let’s appreciate just HOW GOOD it’s been.

Walker, per Next Gen Stats, set a career high with 14 forced missed tackles in Week 1, then came out against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2 and broke his own mark with 15 forced missed tackles. The number of created extra yards is massive. And consider this from NextGenStats: Walker forced 14 or more missed tackles 3 times since 2024. The rest of the entire NFL has done so twice.
That stat alone tells you everything about what Walker is doing for this Kansas City offense right now. He’s not just running the football well. He’s making defenders miss at a rate the rest of the league can’t match, and that elusiveness is turning routine carries into chunk plays.
The question worth asking is whether or not this kind of workload is sustainable across a full 17-game schedule. Plus, potentially, a deep playoff run. At some point the Chiefs will need to be smart about how they manage his touches throughout the season. The last thing Kansas City can afford is to burn out their new star before the games that matter most.
But right now, as the Chiefs’ offense is trying to find its footing with Mahomes still shaking off rust, Walker’s production is a perfect turn of events. He’s giving the passing game room to breathe and taking pressure off a quarterback who doesn’t need to carry the offense on his shoulders through September. That’s the beauty of investing in a dynamic running back. When the passing game needs time to develop, the ground game can carry the load. Walker is doing exactly that to start this season. At a pace the rest of the league’s backs simply can’t match.
