The Miami Dolphins’ urgency to trade for depth last week suddenly makes a lot more sense

Ouch. The Miami Dolphins‘ roster depth this season is limited. That’s as you would expect for a team that’s got more than half of their 2026 salary cap allotment dedicated to players no longer on the roster.
But one position group that appeared to have some promising depth was the offensive line. Particularly after the trade acquisition of Caedan Wallace last week. Yet the surplus up front is fleeting. The Dolphins announced on Sunday afternoon that utility offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer is on season-ending injured reserve.

Salyer signed in Miami this past spring with the expectation that he could, potentially compete for playing time. His one-year deal with Miami was valued at close to the veteran minimum. Yet as training camp got up and rolling, Salyer was no where to be found for the Miami Dolphins. It left the depth options for Miami up front worryingly slim.
Hence, the trade for Wallace, just hours after it was announced that New England intended to release him last Monday.
And now we know that that urgency behind the Wallace deal was done, in part, because of the lingering situation with Salyer. The team has made no official specification on his injury. But practice reports at training camp indicated he was not a visible presence. That was a contrast to several other players battling injuries and the first real sign that something may have gone off the rails. The Miami Dolphins have his replacement in house via Wallace — with the hunt back on for more depth to survive the attrition of the season ahead.
