News from Minnesota Vikings practice confirms suspiscion about one UDFAs future with the franchise
The Minnesota Vikings have an interesting decision on their hands at safety, and Jacob Thomas is making it easier.
Right now, the Minnesota Vikings have a lot of interesting decisions on their hands when it comes to crafting the 53-man roster. From the running back room to the back seven, we can talk about a multitude of different roster battles the Vikings have on their hands.
The most interesting position for me is at safety. We know that the Vikings are hoping that Harrison Smith will return, but it’s getting increasingly unlikely by the day. Luckily, they have some intriguing players at the position.
Jacob Thomas continues to get major opportunities
During practice on Monday, the Vikings had their first one leading up to Friday night’s game against the Denver Broncos. What we got was a really interesting tidbit about the safety position.
Despite being a UDFA, Jacob Thomas continues to get first-team reps, sending a stronger signal each day about his place on the roster.
This isn’t a mistake either. Thomas has been a really good player across the board for the Vikings, getting an interception against the New York Giants and a pass batted down among multiple tackles and splash plays. He’s flying down the field with intent and intelligence.
It’s impressive to see the UDFA from James Madison take this kind of leap so quickly, further proving why they didn’t need to select Dillon Thieneman in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Also in Alec Lewis’ tweet, third-round pick Jakobe Thomas is back on the practice field. He suffered a back injury before the preseason game against the Giants and missed both games so far. Being back is huge for his development. It will be interesting to see if Jakobe ends up playing this Friday against the Denver Broncos, because that game is usually saved for players either not making the team or on the roster bubble.
Right now, safety feels like a net positive position.
