The search for a new defensive coordinator has begun in New England, and Jerod Mayo isn't wasting any time

And they seem to be going in risky, albeit strong, root.

Instead of bringing in someone with coordinator experience, Mayo is focusing on candidates who are already in the league and are serving in lower rolls with other teams. It's the same path Mayo took.

Tom Pelissero reports that one of the interviews are slated to happen on Friday, with the Patriots interviewing Denver Broncos defensive backs coach Christian Parker.

Mayo is currently the youngest head coach in the NFL at 37, and Parker, 32, would become one of the youngest coordinators if they decided to make that hire.

However, they have another interview set.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Mayo will also interview New Orleans Saints linebackers coach Michael Hodges for the job.

And let's not forget about Carolina Panthers linebackers coach Tem Lukaba who was brought in for an interview.

And Lukaba also just earned a high honor, set to serve as the defensive coordinator at the Shrine Bowl.

But they also have to start the search for an offensive coordinator. Lots of decisions to be made.
