The move leaves Drake Maye and the Patriots offense in a precarious spot. New England already looked lost in its season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, with Maye throwing three interceptions, including a back-breaking one to end the game. But the broader problem extends well beyond the quarterback.

New England’s wide receiver room is in trouble

Once Brown left the game against Seattle, the Patriots had nobody on the perimeter making plays. And a quick glance at the depth chart without Brown only amplifies the concern. The top four wide receivers for the next month are Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, Pop Douglas, and Romeo Doubs.

If you want to argue that Doubs will improve on his Week 1 performance, that is totally fine. But based on the evidence at our disposal, he was out there doing pure cardio against the Seahawks. He had about two real targets. One was an interception. The other he dropped. That is not a recipe for offensive success against anyone, let alone the Pittsburgh Steelers defense looming on the schedule.

The Kayshon Boutte trade looms large

The bottom line is this didn’t have to be so dire. The Patriots decided to trade Kayshon Boutte, a proven commodity in that offense, for draft capital. Coach Mike Vrabel justified the move at the time, suggesting Boutte was a player who probably wasn’t going to dress on game days and would have been inactive most weeks. The organization decided to give him an opportunity elsewhere and recoup some picks in return.

The logic made sense on paper. But the reality of football is that you are always one injury away from being totally screwed, and that is exactly where New England finds itself now. Brown’s absence exposes a wide receiver room that lacks the talent and depth to sustain any kind of consistent passing attack.

What comes next for the Patriots?

It might be a little early to wave the white flag on the Patriots’ 2026 season, but the schedule does New England no favors. Pittsburgh’s defense is up next, followed by a gauntlet of opponents after that. Maye will have to get through all of it without his best offensive weapon.

The Boutte trade was a calculated gamble on roster health, and it backfired within a week. New England now faces a four-game stretch where the passing game will need to be carried by a group of receivers who showed almost nothing in the opener. Brown’s return timeline remains uncertain beyond the four-game minimum, and the Patriots’ season trajectory may depend on how quickly he can get back on the field.
