Robert Kraft tipped the New England Patriots’ hand — and now the ball is in Christian Gonzalez’s court

The New England Patriots are reportedly prepared to hand out a record-setting contract to CB Christian Gonzalez.

New England Patriots training camp is off and running. And, during Saturday’s action, owner Robert Kraft confirmed that this team has every intention of keeping cornerback Christian Gonzalez in house for years to come.

In answering a question about Gonzalez’s contract status, Kraft offered some whopping details about where New England stands in negotiations. And, in the process, he’s put the ball firmly back into Gonzalez’s court.

“We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person, that’s why we’ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever play that position in the NFL. Coincidently, it’s the highest-contract in the Patriots’ franchise history. So we’re glad we drafted him and he’s developed here. We hope he will be with us for a long time.”

A record-setting contract equates to a dollar amount comfortably north of $30 million per season. The current cornerback market, per Spotrac, has three names setting the pace at the top. Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie leads the way at $31 million per year on average. Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner follows at $30.1 million annually, and Houston Texans cornerback Derrick Stingley Jr. sits at $30 million per season. That’s the stratosphere Gonzalez is apparently projecting into with this offer from New England.

It’s a hefty price to pay. But just as notable as the dollars involved is what Kraft accomplished by putting this out into the open. Gonzalez is part of a staring contest with the Seattle Seahawks and CB Devon Witherspoon, who is also angling for a new deal. Whoever goes last will probably get paid more. Kraft wants you to know, however, that New England is doing their part to try to get a deal done sooner rather than later. Now it’s just a matter of whether Gonzalez and his camp will oblige.
