It finally happened. 

The New England Patriots moved on from Bill Belichick on Thursday morning, ushering in a new era in Foxborough. And with that, the head coaching search begins. 

So let's take a look at the most likely candidates to replace Belichick following this groundbreaking news. 

Jerod Mayo — Patriots Linebacker Coach 

Mayo has long been thought of as the top successor to replace Belichick, and now that could finally happen. Mayo was expected to leave last season, but remained in New England after the organization released a statement saying that they were in contract negotiations “that would keep him with the team long-term.” He is highly regarded by the players, so this one does make sense. 

Mike Vrabel — Former Tennessee Titans Head Coach 

In a shocking move, the Titans let go of Vrabel and now he is free to go elsewhere. He is a highly regarded head coach in the league and is expected to draw in significant interest. And with that, he could look to return to New England. There has been some reported interest from Vrabel on returning to New England, so let's see if it happens.  

Brian Flores — Vikings Defensive Coordinator 

On the topic of bringing back some familiar faces, why not Brian Flores. The former Miami Dolphins head coach spent a lot of time within the Patriots organization, starting with a scouting role in 2004 before moving up through the ranks. Along with Mayo, he has head coaching experience. 

Ben Johnson — Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator

The Patriots need a completely new look to their offense. That much is clear. And Johnson's success in Detroit has made him a top candidate this season across many of the different teams. So with the vacancy in New England, expect him to get a call. 

Jim Harbaugh — Michigan Wolverines Head Coach 

After winning a National Championship this season, Harbaugh appears ready to come to the NFL. And it's clear that he has success building a winning culture. Plus with all the Michigan alum in the building, they would love to get to play for him again. 

Josh McDaniels — Former Las Vegas Raiders Head Coach 

This one is an interesting concept. McDaniels' tenure as head coach has not worked out now twice. But NFL Network's Ian Rapoport explained that a possible reunion in Foxborough "shouldn't be ruled out." McDaniels' success as offensive coordinator cannot be denied, and with the way the offense played this season, he would help breathe some life back into the building and bring back those winning ways.
