Steelers training camp Week 1 takeaways: Drew Allar vs. Will Howard, surprise leaders in position battles, and budding star at CB

The Pittsburgh Steelers are about to begin real football for the first time this week. The pads will be popping in Latrobe, starting on Monday. But before they do, here is a look back at Week 1, with the biggest takeaways from four practices.

The acclimation period is over in Latrobe. The Pittsburgh Steelers will begin padded practice on Monday, and the first week of training camp delivered plenty worth dissecting despite the lack of physicality. High intensity, fast pace, no pads. Yet several position battles and standout performances have already started shaping the narrative heading into what should be a revealing stretch of work in the coming days.

Key Steelers camp dates

  • First day of pads (Monday, August 3).
  • Saturday night lights (Saturday, August 8).
  • First preseason game (August 13 vs. Green Bay Packers).

Offensive side: Dowdle leads, Roman Wilson shines

Everyone wants to talk about camp battles, and through four practices, a few are starting to take shape. At running back, Rico Dowdle appears to have the upper hand on incumbent Jaylen Warren. That one deserves a close eye because the dynamic could change in an instant once the pads come on and the running game gets a true evaluation.

At wide receiver, Roman Wilson has been the talk of camp on the offensive side of the ball. He has shown tremendous separation, the ability to look confident catching the ball, and he’s attacking the front end of the football. Reports and clips out of Latrobe paint a picture of a player who is growing more comfortable by the day. Germie Bernard, on the other hand, may be experiencing some rookie jitters. He was steady-handed at the University of Alabama, but the same can’t be said for his first week. I expect that to change when the pads come on and the adrenaline of live reps takes over.

Aaron Rodgers has looked extremely sharp despite limited reps. Coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that the acclimation period was designed to focus on the other quarterbacks, and he followed through. Mason Rudolph is the clear No. 2 heading into the padded portion of camp. Behind him, Will Howard and Drew Aller both flashed good moments, and both had some questionable ones. To be expected in the first week. We’ll see how they develop through the coming weeks.

The offensive line has seen a lot of shape-shifting and mix-and-matching. Spencer Anderson remains firm at right guard, though. It will be fascinating to see how that group holds up against what we know to be an all-world defensive line now that full contact begins.

Defensive side: Asante Samuel Jr. is taking over

The real storyline on defense has been Asante Samuel Jr. With no Joey Porter Jr., no Donte Kent, and no Jalen Ramsey, Samuel has taken over Latrobe. He has been making plays each and every practice, forcing pass breakups, collapsing on routes underneath, and being an absolute menace to the offense. He’s looked tremendous in his opportunity.

Beyond that, rookie cornerback Daylen Everette, Pittsburgh’s pick out of Georgia, had his welcome-to-the-NFL moment when DK Metcalf ripped the ball off his head in the back of the red zone. Other than that, he’s been stellar. McCarthy went as far as to say Everette doesn’t even look like a rookie out there. That’s encouraging news for the Steelers’ cornerback room, considering their top guy in Porter isn’t practicing yet.

In the safety room, the absences of DeShon Elliott and Darnell Savage had created a lot of shuffling. Jaquan Brisker has been the constant, and Pittsburgh signed Rashawn Jenkins on Saturday to potentially fill the void, while cutting Savage.

Injury front and what’s next

McCarthy said the team is looking to get some players back from PUP potentially this week. That could be Porter, Ramsey, or Kent. We’ll keep a close eye on those developments as padded practices ramp up.

The bottom line is the Steelers got exactly what they needed from the first week: real evaluation, emerging storylines, and a clear picture of who is ready to compete when the physicality arrives Monday.
