The Georgia Bulldogs just landed a verbal commitment from James Johnson, the No. 1 defensive lineman in the 2026 class, but they may already be at risk of losing him.
According to a new report from Gators Network, Florida remains in contact with Johnson and could be lining up another visit. Johnson also told Swamp247’s Tyler Harden that Florida isn’t the only major program still pushing hard to flip him.
"I’ll probably keep exploring other options in the fall," Johnson said. "Game’s not really over until December. Texas has been trying. Florida, Miami, they’re still trying. I’m still keeping an open mind.”
Johnson is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 defensive lineman and the No. 15 overall recruit from the class of 2026.
Shortly after verbally committing to Georgia, Johnson told reporters the relationships he built in Athens beat out other schools.
“Georgia is DLU,” Johnson told On3. “They are all about development. What made Georgia No. 1 is the way they develop defensive linemen, my relationships with the coaches, and the fit into their scheme. They run a great defense that really fits the way I play, so I know I can excel there. That is what it came down to."
While this doesn’t confirm that Johnson is flipping, it’s a reminder of how quickly things can change in recruiting, and how stressful it is for programs that have to keep recruiting a player even after landing what feels like “a lock.”
