Ohio State will be well represented in the 2025 NFL Draft with a chance at tying or breaking Georgia’s (2022) record for most players drafted in one year.
The Buckeyes benefited from returning players who were draft-eligible and from the transfer portal.
One player set to be drafted is Kansas State transfer QB Will Howard and he shined at Ohio State in 2024. However, one key NFL draft analyst has him ranked below two former Buckeyes.
Ex-Buckeyes’ Quinn Ewers and Kyle McCord come in ahead of Will Howard
The Atheltic’s Dane Brugler released “The Beast” for the 2025 NFL Draft and it is the best guide dropped ahead of the draft every year. However, one thing that stood out was his rankings at quarterback. Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, and Jaxson Dart led the way. Ohio State’s Howard came in at No. 8 and was behind Kyle McCord at No. 7 and Quinn Ewers at No. 6.
Ewers spent one season at Ohio State before transferring to Texas for his final three years of college football. McCord was in Columbus for his first three seasons and was the starter in 2023 before transferring to Syracuse. The common thing with all three quarterbacks was that they were all transfers.
Howard won a National Championship while completing 73 percent of his passes for 4,010 yards and 35 touchdowns. The Kansas State transfer threw 10 interceptions and added seven touchdowns on the ground. Ewers put up 31 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions, and 3,472 yards. McCord had a big year for Syracuse with 4,779 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
Football is a team sport and Howard has the best supporting cast around him. The Buckeyes were loaded and that played a part in Howard having a better season than both quarterbacks. However, Howard is arguably the strongest leader of the three and that goes a long way. Howard also checks the box for the best physical build out of the three QBs.
All three quarterbacks are expected to be selected in the middle rounds of the draft. Howard going to Ohio State helped his draft stock immensely, just like McCord going to Syracuse helped him. Rankings don’t matter in the grand scheme and the NFL careers have to play out. Still, it won’t be only Ohio State fans questioning Howard being ranked below both McCord and Ewers.
