The Florida Gators have been red hot in the month of June and that could continue, as four-star offensive tackle Claude Mpouma has narrowed his list down to five schools and set a commitment date for June 29th.
Of head coach Billy Napier's committed recruits, 11 of them have committed in the month of June. This includes multiple offensive linemen.
- Three-star G'Nivre Carr
- Three-star Chancellor Campbell
- Three-star Tyler Chukuyem
- Three-star Javarii Luckas
The trend here is the Gators targeting three-star offensive linemen. Why are they focusing so much on lower level recruits? Napier has a long tradition of developing offensive linemen and the Gators likely see these players as undervalued by the recruiting services right now, especially in the case of a guy like Campbell who currently stands at 6'8 with a very long reach.
The reason Campbell stands out is because he shares a similar body type to Mpouma. Napier has shown a want to target very tall and long offensive tackles. Strength is something you can work on, but you can't teach reach.
Mpouma is currently the 14th-ranked offensive tackle per the On3 sports Industry Ranking and would be the fourth-higest ranking Gators commit in the class thus far, and they have a solid chance to land the Chicago, Illinois, product.
Right now, the Gators sit third on the On3 Sports Recruiting Prediction Machine at 20.1%, ranking behind Auburn (23.4%) and Nebraska (33.3%). Having Nebraska at the top makes some sense, as he is currently in Lincoln visiting the Cornhuskers.
The Gators have had Mpouma on campus twice, including an official visit on the final official visit weekend on June 13th. This was after he took an unofficial visit to Gainesville on April 5th.
It feels like a three-horse race between the top three schools right now, as Mpouma has yet to take an official or unofficial visit to either Ohio State or Michigan, the other two schools in his top five. However, they can't be ruled out due to Chicago being in the middle of Big Ten country.
Sunday, the 29th will be a crucial day for the Gators.
