New stat reveals just how disastrous Oklahoma's quarterback play was in 2024 and offers hope for their 2025 offense

The less said about the Oklahoma Sooners' offense in 2024, the better. It was such a depressing moment for Oklahoma football that I think we're all better off just burning it straight from our memory.
However, there are a few things to take away from the season that provide some interesting nuggets that we can use to project things for the Sooners in 2025.
One of those is a stat that illustrates just how poor Oklahoma's quarterback play was last season and just how much it wrecked any hope the Sooners had last season.
In layman's terms: Of the 44 SEC offenses over the last three seasons, Oklahoma's pressure rate was slightly below the average mark. However, they took the fourth-most sacks of all 44 of those offenses.
Sacks are, more often than not, a quarterback stat, as alluded to in the tweet. Jackson Arnold was sacked 36 times last season, the sixth-most in CFB. Michael Hawkins was sacked another 16 times. Arnold's pressure-to-sack rate was the third-most in CFB last season, demonstrating just how awful he was at avoiding sacks. Michael Hawkins had a similar number, coming in at 24th-most in CFB last season.
These two lost nearly five hundred yards combined between them last season on sacks alone. People lamented about the state of Oklahoma's offensive line last season, but both the tape and numbers suggest that quarterback play was the root cause of their issues in that regard.
What does this mean for the Sooners in 2025? Well, it somewhat puts paid to the detractors about their offensive line. Oklahoma is better up front this season, with much more returning talent than they had last season. With a better quarterback and a better offense in tow, it should be a much more encouraging season for the Sooners this year.
Oklahoma Sooners break a surprisingly cold streak with latest commitment of talented specialist in 2026 recruiting class
The Oklahoma Sooners have been on a roll with building their recruiting class of 2026, with nine commitments in the last month, including elite quarterback Bowe Bentley. Make that ten commitments now, as the Sooners have added on their best kicker recruit in nearly a decade now, pulling in Texas native Trace Rudd. Rudd, a […]
