The Seattle Seahawks have one former Ohio State star on its roster in Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and their actions this offseason could help another one cash in with a huge second contract. DK Metcalf has requested a trade in the wake of Tyler Lockett's release and the team's unwillingness to extend his deal.
So how would that affect former Buckeye receiver Garrett Wilson?
Metcalf's salary demands, which The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported is around $30 million, should be the floor for New York Jets star Garrett Wilson.
Since joining the Jets, Wilson has totaled 279 receptions with 3,249 yards and 14 touchdowns. Turning 25 this summer, he's certainly in line to score a huge deal. Whether that deal is with the Jets or elsewhere is another question, but the Jets should have every reason to keep its young star.
Metcalf is a good bar for Wilson. Still only 27, Metcalf is a very good but not elite playmaker. He's almost exclusively a vertical threat with terrific hands and explosiveness. Wilson is more creative after the catch and boasts incredible versatility, comparatively.
If Metcalf gets $30 million a year, Wilson can aim even higher.
Wilson was an incredible playmaker for the Buckeyes and has been excellent with the Jets despite the franchise being a constant mess. He made first-team All-American in 2021 when he caught 70 passes for 1,054 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Wilson and Chris Olave became the first set of Ohio State receivers to both be named first-team All-American in the same season.
