The Michigan Wolverines weren't super active in the transfer portal, focusing mainly on landing one of the top recruiting classes in the country, but they still pulled in a solid haul out of the portal, adding talent at multiple positions.

However, they still have needs they have to address before they enter the 2025 season. The upcoming spring transfer portal window could be a great opportunity to do just that.

What positions do the Michigan Wolverines need the most when the next window for the transfer portal opens up?

Michigan Wolverines Spring Transfer Portal Targets

Offensive Line

I'm keeping this one vague because the Wolverines need help at every position on the offensive line. Pick any of the starting five positions and I'm not certain the Wolverines have a steady answer there. The most pressing position has to be left tackle. One of Andrew Sprague or Evan Link will likely take that over, but both struggled in 2024, and I'm not sold on either of them being better at flipping over to left tackle in 2025. Whoever loses the left tackle battle seemingly will be the team's right tackle, but that doesn't fill me with any comfort.

Center is a question mark as well. Greg Crippen likely has the job, but he's far from proven. Both guard spots were disappointing in 2024 and left guard Josh Priebe graduated. Their depth is also thin across the board. It's stunning to me that Michigan didn't pursue more talent here in the portal, but they should remedy that in the spring.

Wide Receiver

The Wolverines return Semaj Morgan and Fred Moore and added top-100 recruit Andrew Marsh and Indiana transfer Donaven McCulley, but this unit is far from settled. This unit is young and unproven. While they weren't totally at fault for Michigan's rather poor passing offense last season, none of them stood out.

If a talented playmaker becomes available here in the spring transfer portal window, Michigan shouldn't be afraid to pursue him with what they have on roster.

Linebacker

If the rumors about Jaishawn Barham moving to OLB/EDGE next season do end up happening, Michigan's linebacker depth will take a big hit. Ernest Hausmann is a reliable player, but the rest of the Wolverines' linebacker corps is totally unproven. Jimmy Rolder and Jaydon Hood have been Wolverines for years and haven't found a way onto the field consistently, while transfer addition Troy Bowles has taken less than 50 snaps in his career.

Those options aren't inspiring if they have to become full-time starters or major rotation players next season. I would hope the staff pursues a more proven player to add some insurance here.

Cornerback

The Wolverines will return two starters at cornerback in Jyaire Hill and nickel Zeke Berry, but the rest of that room is young and unproven. Jo'Ziah Edmond filled in on occasion but had just 38 snaps in 2024. Their depth is razor-thin without major contributions from their upcoming 2025 class, which would make me a tad nervous if the Wolverines want to make a push for winning the Big Ten in 2025.

Punter

While punter might not be a high priority for fans, Michigan's reliable punter Tommy Doman transferred away in the offseason, leaving a vacancy behind with no options behind him. The Wolverines could turn to Hudson Hollenbeck, a kicker, here, but it sounds like Michigan is going to pursue options at punter in the spring transfer portal.
