Five star quarterback Bryce Underwood has barely been on campus for a month and the Michigan Wolverines are already surprisingly closing in on their next elite QB recruit.
Sherrone Moore and company quickly realized last fall (whether they will admit it publicly or not) that they were in deep trouble when it came to their quarterback room early on. After finishing nearly dead last in most every single meaningful passing statistic among all FBS college football teams in 2024 the Michigan staff and super rich famous alumni decided they would never let that happen again.
After flipping Bryce Underwood from LSU–the number one player in the entire 2025 recruiting class–Michigan is now already locked in as a top five school for a special quarterback talent in the 2027 class. But what are their chances of really signing him?
Trae Taylor, Elite Quarterback Recruit
It's still too early for most of the recruiting services to officially have Taylor ranked, but with 35 scholarship offers and impressive physical traits most believe he has an excellent chance to finish as a five star recruit in 2027.
This week Taylor announced his top five schools that he's considering after taking unofficial visits with nearly 20 programs already. Michigan made the cut, and based on his track record of communication with the other programs the Wolverines certainly look like they're in the lead.
Nebraska, Illinois, Texas A&M, and LSU are the other four schools apparently still in the mix to land Trae Taylor, but based on a collection of recent comments from the future five star and his recent visits only one of these four programs look like real contenders with Michigan.
Illinois is his home state and offered him extremely early (March of 2024) when he was still just a freshman, but he hasn't had hardly any in-person contact with the Illini in several months. Texas A&M and LSU joined the fold a little later. Both have significant dollars to spend and look like they'll be the price tag contenders based on recent and available NIL investment information, but on the relational side they are far, far behind.
The real contender seems like it's Nebraska. Taylor took multiple unofficial visits with them last fall shortly after their offer in October. The good news is that the Huskers' recent buzz and momentum is nothing compared to what Michigan has been building with Taylor for over a year and a half.
Jim Harbaugh was still six months away from bringing the Wolverines a national championship when Michigan first offered Taylor, ahead of his freshman high school season. Since then Taylor has been all about Michigan, visiting with the staff on at least a dozen different occasions.
When we combine Michigan's recent elite quarterback recruiting (Bryce Underwood) and NFL Draft success (J.J. McCarthy), the newfound massive funding directed to the position via external program donors, and the longstanding relationship that Sherrone Moore and his staff have with Trae Taylor it certainly seems like they're nearing yet another huge QB commitment.
