Ohio State didn’t smoke the Tennessee game to be just a one-time thing. The Buckeyes showed up in the same way against Oregon and are going to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff.
The Buckeyes rolled Oregon, 42-21, to move on to playing Texas next on Jan. 10. Ohio State got off to a 34-0 lead against Oregon and the start was enough to put Oregon away.
Freshman Jeremiah Smith did the most damage in the first half with two touchdowns against the Ducks. After the game, Oregon’s Dan Lanning had a strong statement about Smifj.
“He’s strong. He attacks the ball in the air as well as any receiver I’ve seen. I mean, the guy is NFL-ready, he’s that talented,” Lanning said. “He’s very special and Will Howard did a great job of getting the ball to him tonight. He’s tough to defend, he’s physical, really talented player.”
Ohio State’s first touchdown was a short pass to Smith in space who was not caught the rest of the way. Oregon just didn’t have anyone to match up with Smith and that was evident.
“I think they were able to find some shot opportunities, they caught us in a couple of coverages that gave them the chance to have success,” Lanning admitted.
Smith finished with just under 290 yards against Oregon in two matchups against them this season. On the year, Smith has 1,224 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Buckeyes. As he has been all year for the Buckeyes, he is their No. 1 threat for the offense in the postseason.
Somehow, the Buckeyes get two more years of this with Smith after this season. To have a freshman at this talent level are rare and what Smith is doing is more than impressive. If the Buckeyes are going to win it all, expect Smith to continue to be a big part of the success.
