Ohio State put a bow on the 2024 college football season last night with a win over Notre Dame to capture a National Championship. With the win, Ryan Day became just the third active head coach to be a National Championship winner.
The Buckeyes beat five top-five teams this season and their run to winning it all was special. Ohio State beat Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame to win it all in the first expanded format of the College Football Playoff.
Coming off of the longest season that college football has ever seen, things are feeling a bit different. Day admitted that the spring football period could be a bit different due to the run the team just made.
“I don’t know if spring practice is going to look the way it usually does,” Day said on Tuesday. “I don’t know that it can, quite honestly, with the amount of games these guys have played.”
The wear and tear that comes with a 16 game season is not only physical but mental too. This is the first season of this many games being played for these players at this level, so recovery could look different for the program. Before, teams were playing 12 to 13 games to win it all.
Ohio State finishes their season at 14-2 and as the No. 1 team in the AP. The Buckeyes turned their season around after the loss to Michigan in the final regular season game. Ohio State came together as a team after that and went on a run to bring their first title in a decade.
Day is now 70-10 as a head coach in his first six seasons and suddenly his resume is that much more impressive.
Several players now have NFL decisions to make on whether or not they will enter the draft. On the other hand, players have a few days to enter the transfer portal if they wish.
We are just six weeks away from the team ramping things up again for the spring. Things will be a bit different for Ohio State next season with their roster, but they still return a very talented team that will be able to make a run at defending their National Championship.
