It has been an interesting journey for Nebraska transfer running back Dante Dowdell who entered the portal last week. He was a slight surprise entry, coming off his best collegiate season in 2024. In 12 games, he led the Cornhuskers with 614 yards on the ground and 12 rushing touchdowns.

This isn’t the first time Dowdell has entered the portal. He originally signed with the Oregon Ducks in the 2023 recruiting class. Dowdell was considered a consensus four-star player coming out of Picayune Memorial in the state of Mississippi. Each major recruiting platform had Dowdell pegged as a top 200 player in the class, ranking highest by Rivals who had him pegged as the No. 109 overall player and No. 6 running back in the class.

Dowdell spent just one season as a part of the Oregon program, finishing the 2023 season with 90 yards and a touchdown on just 17 carries. With this recent transfer from the Cornhuskers, this will make the third team in three years for Dowdell. It has been surprising to see such a talented player move around this often.

As a player, there is a lot to love about Dowdell. At 6-2 and 225 pounds, he brings the power to the table you would expect. Dowdell has the lower leg drive to move the pile, and does a great job finishing near the goal line. The unique part of Dowdell is the explosiveness he brings to the table for a runner his size.

There are a lot of programs that could use a natural runner like Dowdell. He is expected to visit Kentucky soon, but the market promises to heat up. Dowdell has an argument as one of the more talented running backs in the portal right now.
