Ohio State added its second offensive tackle via the transfer portal in the last week, addressing a massive concern within the program and fan base. After seeing the offensive line be uncertain for the past few years, the fan base has grown weary of recruiting woes and uneven development.
One way to overcome a struggling pipeline is to maximize the transfer portal. After signing Phillip Daniels from Minnesota to presumably take the right tackle job in 2025 and beyond, the Buckeyes signed Ethan Onianwa from Rice.
Onianwa has experience at both tackle spots, but it'd make sense he passed on entering the 2025 NFL Draft as a mid-round projection in order to play more left tackle on a bigger stage.
Former Ohio State All-American may be partially to thank for big transfer portal addition by the Buckeyes
The Ohio State Buckeyes have finally landed an offensive lineman from the transfer portal after being linked to several notable names. Minnesota tackle Phillip Daniels comes back to his home state of Ohio and figures to be the Buckeyes' starting left or right tackle in 2025. While his return to Ohio as a Cincinnati kid […]
Onianwa visited Columbus on December 15 and is also considering Iowa, Texas A&M, Florida State, and Oklahoma. The 6-foot-6, 345-pound offensive tackle has been a three-year starter for Rice, primarily playing as a right tackle for the Owls. He has one season of eligibility remaining.
According to Pro Football Focus, Onianwa earned an overall grade of 74.6 and a pass-blocking grade of 79.3 in 2024. He allowed only one sack on 350 pass-blocking snaps during the last season. As per 247Sports' transfer rankings, Ethan Onianwa is regarded as the No. 13 offensive tackle on the transfer market. He was a three-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class.
Ohio State may not be done along the line. They're still in the mix for Northwestern guard Josh Thompson, who could pair with Luke Montgomery or Tegra Tashabola to form quite the duo.
At least for now, the tackle position is far more settled for 2025, and that's a position that had massive concerns entering the portal season. Along with the addition of CJ Donaldson, the Buckeyes have done well in embracing new looks.
CJ Donaldson's transfer addition allows Ohio State to redefine 2025 offense around Julian Sayin
The Ohio State Buckeyes picked up a few transfer portal commitments after beating the Tennessee Volunteers last weekend. The most familiar name to college football fans is CJ Donaldson Jr. After entering the portal, the former West Virginia Mountaineers tailback didn't take long to pick the Buckeyes. Donaldson was considered the sixth-best running back prospect […]
