Ohio State’s win over Tennessee was impressive, but the Buckeyes still need to do more damage in the College Football Playoff to help their fans forget what happened at the end of the regular season.
If the Buckeyes can go on and win it all, no one is going to care that they fell to Michigan in the final regular season game of the year. That loss kept Ohio State from reaching its goal of competing for a Big Ten Championship.
Since then, the fanbase has been loud and the national media has taken notice. Former Alabama head coach and current college football analyst Nick Saban had quite the comment about Ohio State fans.
“You know, we’ve kind of gotten on there, sort of, fans a little bit. But, you know, these Ohio State fans? You know, they have got a psychotic obsession with Michigan and they need to go get therapy or something to try to get it fixed,” Saban said on The Pat McAfee Show recently. “They have a chance to win the national championship and here you are, you know, and nobody’s excited about their opportunity to play because they lost to Michigan, which was a tough game and they lost the game probably by some of the mistakes that they made. Those are correctable things.”
To be fair to Saban here, if you are not in Ohio or Michigan, you probably just don’t understand how big the rivalry is. Ohio State fans are still excited about the Buckeyes’ chances to go and win it all. There is also a reality, and that is that Ohio State has lost to Michigan four straight times. The Wolverines clearly have Ohio State’s number at the moment and that just will never be acceptable in Columbus.
Of course, Ohio State’s season is still going on and they have a big test in front of them with Oregon. Meanwhile, Michigan is set to play in a bowl game without much meaning against Alabama. They are two teams on two different paths, but the head-to-head still means something to fans.
Telling fans to seek therapy was a cheap shot if there ever was one. The thing about sports is, you can’t tell someone how to be a fan, and that is the case here.
If Ohio State can make it to the National Championship, you can bet on any bad feeling around the program being gone.
