The college football regular season is over and conference championship games are here. Kenny Dillingham and his red hot Arizona State Sun Devils are set to face off against Matt Campbell and his rallying Iowa State Cyclones in a Big 12 Championship matchup never seen before. Which team will come out on top, earning perhaps the final spot in the first ever 12-Team College Football Playoff?
These two new Big 12 Conference rivals have never once played each other in the history of their college football programs. Arizona State has obviously never competed for a Big 12 Conference Championship either seeing as this is their first season there. This will be brand new for everyone and everything involved.
Heading into this exciting inaugural match between the Sun Devils and the Cyclones, media members of A to Z Sports who cover multiple teams decided to weigh in, sharing their predictions for this Big 12 Championship battle with massive playoff implications. The picks are in. Enjoy!
Arizona State 26, Iowa State 24
Arizona State is one of the hottest teams in the country, fresh off of five straight wins with an average margin of victory over 16 points in that span. The Sun Devils have largely ridden the legs of star running back Cameron Skattebo all season long. He's tallied over 320 yards and six touchdowns in the last two games alone as teams continue to fail to corral him. When Skattebo can't keep the chains moving the team usually relies on wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, but he's out for the year now. However, their skill position talents beyond Tyson are strong too.
Iowa State has the only wide receiver duo in the nation with over 1000 yards apiece in Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel. Higgins' insane size and length at 6'4", 215 pounds dominates via physicality. Noel's speed and agility separates with ease. Both offenses have multiple "trump card" players that they can go to, but Arizona State gets within scoring position more often here thanks to their balance between the pass and run. Kenny Dillingham and Arizona State spoil Matt Campbell's best season with Iowa State, securing perhaps the final spot in the College Football Playoff. – Travis May
Iowa State 27, Arizona State 24
I don't see how this isn't a tremendously stressful game to watch as a fan. It's circled on my calendar because these teams are well-coached and have unique game plans. Ultimately, I like Iowa State's passing game and playmakers more than I like Arizona State's reliance on a high-end scheme. This comes down to the wire, and Rocco Becht comes through in the clutch. – Ian Valentino
Final predictions for the pivotal ACC Championship game between No. 17 Clemson and No. 8 SMU
The stakes are very high.
Arizona State 31, Iowa State 24
At this point of the season, Kenny Dillingham has his Sun Devils looking on fire. Their offense–even with Jordyn Tyson banged up–I still think they have enough weapons to give Iowa State fits. Sam Leavitt is slinging it right now, and Iowa State's defense has only been lock-down good a few times this season, mostly against really bad teams. This is a game that should be extremely fun to watch, and really either team could come out on top. – Justin Churchill
Arizona State 27, Iowa State 21
Nobody could have predicted this as the Big 12 title game going into the season. Iowa State had never won 10 games in a season before and Arizona State came from the doldrums to also win 10 games in Kenny Dillingham's second season.
The big key here is going to be how the Sun Devils will manage without wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. They have managed other big injuries before with Cameron Skattebo and Sam Leavitt both missing time throughout the season. Can they do it again and earn a bye in the College Football Playoff? History says they can and the sports books do too. Ride Skattebo to the CFP. – Tyler Forness
