Oregon can finish this season as the only undefeated team in college football with a win over Washington. Does it add anything tangible to their chase for a national championship? Of course not. As previously stated, they're already playing in the Big Ten Championship next weekend in Indianapolis, with their opponent to be decided this weekend. What it does add, though, is a layer of understanding to their dominance this season and their status among the country's elite programs.
Oregon hasn't gone undefeated since they finished 12-0 in 2010 on their way to the BCS National Championship game against Auburn that saw the Ducks lose to Cam Newton and company.
Going undefeated this year is more of a message than anything else. The team is closing in on a top-5 recruiting class with the early signing period opening up next week, won Big Ten games in eight straight weeks, overcame a massive amount of travel obstacles, entered the season with a new quarterback, new center, new starting running back, but the same man leading the charge in Dan Lanning.
Oregon is on a quest to be considered one of the blue blood programs in college football. They won't secure their spot in the class of college football royalty with just one year, but an undefeated season in year one in the Big Ten and a potential deep College Football Playoffs run is an incredible step in making the leap.
