Former Ohio State quarterback is off to a strong start through eight games in his second NFL season with the Houston Texans. His numbers aren’t quite where they were last season, and now there is reason to believe things could become a bit tougher.
Stroud had already been operating without his top side receive option Nico Collins since the beginning of October due to a hamstring injury. Now, the former Buckeye just lost another 1,000-yard wide receiver and he won’t be back this year.
In the Texans’ defeat of the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8, wide receiver Stefon Diggs tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the season.
Losing Diggs is a big loss for the Texans and their passing game. The Pro Bowl-level wide receiver had five catches for 81 yards against the Colts before suffering the knee injury. On the year, he has 496 yards and three touchdowns. With Diggs being in a contract year, it could be the only year that Stroud has him to throw the ball to.
During his media availability on Tuesday, Stroud appeared to be a bit shaken up by the news.
“I feel really bad for him. He was having the best time playing football in his career, that’s what he told us.”
The Texans will soon have Collins back in the mix and Tank Dell is another solid option for them. Perhaps former Buckeye tight end Cade Stover will get more opportunity as a pass catcher behind Dalton Shultz as well. There are options for the Texans, but they won’t exactly be able to replace Diggs.
A tough break indeed for Stroud in his second season in the NFL.
Ryan Day could be making a costly mistake that may help Penn State hand the Buckeyes their second loss
The Buckeyes should go a different route.
