The Oklahoma Sooners have made the correct decision to fire offensive coordinator Seth Littrell after a dismal start to the 2024 season.
According to SoonerScoop.com, Littrell, hired in December 2023 to be Oklahoma’s play-caller, has been fired. Co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley is expected to call plays, and analyst Kevin Johns is expected to be elevated to quarterbacks coach for the remainder of the season.
This move comes on the heels of an embarrassing 35-9 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday evening.
This move just had to happen.
Five coaches the Oklahoma Sooners should pursue to replace OC Seth Littrell in 2025
It's time for the Oklahoma Sooners to fire offensive coordinator Seth Littrell. It's clearly not working and after another embarrassing outing by the offense, changes have to be made. Fortunately, I've been working on an offensive coordinator list for several weeks now. Let's look on the optimistic side here and build a future for Sooners […]
The offense was an abject disaster. The game plans were bad, and the players blew assignments regularly. The scripts were poor. The blocking scheme was horrendous. The play designs have been ineffective at best and downright stupid at worst.
The unit was completely dysfunctional. Oklahoma entered the weekend 133rd out of 134 teams on explosive plays, just ahead of the 0-6 Kennesaw State Owls and they are 124th in EPA/Play, tied with KENT STATE in that category.
The Oklahoma Sooners did not have a single game with over 200 yards of passing offense until the game against South Carolina, which was mostly all garbage time.
The last time that sort of stretch happened saw the Sooners fire former offensive coordinator Josh Heupel. History repeated itself here.
Interim offensive coordinator Joe Jon Finley worked under Lincoln Riley and Jeff Lebby with the Sooners and was promoted to co-offensive coordinator this past offseason.
Analyst Kevin Johns, who will take over as quarterbacks coach, was Duke's offensive coordinator under Mike Elko in both 2022 and 2023, where he worked with now-Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard.
Hopefully, their promotion smooths out a lot of the miscues this offense has endured so far this season. Kudos to Brent Venables, who said last week he had never done a mid-season firing, for recognizing that this move had to happen.
