Fresh off being named the NFL Rookie of the Week for a 125 receiving yard performance last week against the Tennessee Titans, rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman continued where he left off with a strong first drive, capped off by a monster of a touchdown grab over Riq Woolen. Coleman is establishing himself as a go-to red zone target for quarterback Josh Allen, who apparently trusts the rookie on contested catch situations.
When Coleman was drafted, one of the biggest strengths in his profile was his contested catch ability, and the leaping skills to go up and grab jump ball passes. We've seen Allen go to Coleman multiple times in situations similar to this one.
Coleman played college basketball at Michigan State University, giving him literal and metaphorical above-the-rim abilities.
Coleman's progression is going to be an interesting one to watch. Last week, it got the attention of new teammate Amari Cooper.
"That was the impressive thing about today. I know a lot of guys stepped up and made plays at the wide receiver position, you know, congratulations to the young buck Keon for his first 100-yard game, he really put together a string of plays out there," Cooper said. "And I still believe that the play that was called, that was a touchdown. It looks like he got like three feet in, and he definitely had control of the ball. But it was a lot of impressive plays made out there by the receiver group."
The rookie still has plenty of developing to do, but if he can be relied on early for his red zone abilities and his after the catch athleticism on easy targets, it's a great foundation to build upon as his first season with Allen continues on.
