In a surprise, Oregon's defense was without their top pass rusher, Jordan Burch, against Wisconsin. Without him on the field, though, the Oregon defensive front is still in great hands.
The front of this team is their biggest strength. Derrick Harmon and Jamaree Caldwell on the interior is stout and can collapse the pocket, and budding superstar true sophomore Matayo Uiagalelei is continuing to develop into a dependable, athletic pass rusher in his own right.
On Saturday night, he was everywhere, stepping up in the biggest spots and making play after play, including a game-sealing interception late in the fourth quarter.
Uiagalelei finished the game with five tackles, a sack, and the game-sealing pick, and a handful of pressures that we don't yet have the numbers on. But his presence was crucial.
"I think everybody’s taking notice of what kind of player Matayo is," head coach Dan Lanning said after the victory. "The entire front did a great job tonight. And Matayo certainly has shown the ability to be a great player for us. He gets better and better every single week, and he’d be the first guy to tell you that it’s about the people around him. It’s about the coverage that existed on that play to create that. It’s about the batted ball that was in the air that he took advantage of. We didn’t have any takeaways in this game until that play, and that one certainly was a big one.”
Matayo Uiagalelei is on track to be a highly-regarded 2026 NFL Draft prospect. He has the size, the speed, the bend, and the strength to be a first-round pick. He's now up to eight sacks on the season, which is a huge step forward in his sophomore season. The stock is soaring on the explosive pass rusher, and the Ducks are fortunate to have him.
