The narrative surrounding the LSU Tigers for much of this past off-season had to do with their defensive line and their lack of depth (and recruiting) there. Brian Kelly and his defensive line coach Bo Davis have been doing some work this spring and summer to make sure that problem is remedied adding four recruits along their front since June.
Now the LSU defensive front depth looks like it's reaching "stacked" territory for the 2025 recruiting class as they just added yet another top notch talent. Walter Mathis Jr., a top tier three star (fringe four star) defensive line recruit has had over 30 FBS programs chasing after him for multiple years now, but he chose to commit to LSU on Friday.
Mathis chose LSU over Miami, Auburn, Clemson, Alabama, Georgia and several more top power conference schools. He'll now be the fifth defensive front recruit for LSU's current Top 3 class for the 2025 recruiting class.
The 6'3", nearly 300-pound monster of a young man has been averaging over four tackles per game with just over 50 total tackles for loss in the last 3+ high school seasons and is on pace to finish with over 20 sacks in his four-year career prior to joining LSU. Mathis has played nearly 40 games already, dominating from a very young age.
Mathis Jr. is already off to a fast start this fall too, so don't be surprised if he settles firmly in the four star recruit range when the final rankings are released via all the major services like On3, 247Sports, and Rivals. He should be talented enough to work his way onto the field early next fall in Baton Rouge.
