Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is at a crossroads in his NFL career and he is currently making the best of it.
Playing in the last year of his current deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being traded by the Chicago Bears, Fields has been taking care of business with the Steelers.
Going into the season, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson was expected to be the starter, however, he has been bothered by a calf injury up until this point. With the Steelers off to a 3-0 start with Fields as the quarterback, head coach Mike Tomlin is now in a tough position.
Tomlin has remained adamant that Wilson is the quarterback, but Fields has likely forced his hand to keep him as the guy at this point. The likelihood of a switch being made following a perfect start to the season should be next to none. It would be tough to tell a locker room you’re moving off of the guy who has helped you get to 3-0.
This season, Fields is completing 73 percent of his passes for 518 yards and two touchdowns so far. Fields threw his first interception in the Week 3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The former Ohio State product has 90 rushing yards through three games, which is second on the team behind running back Najee Harris.
Continuing at this rate, Fields would be looking at a nice contract coming his way next offseason, whether that be with the Steelers or elsewhere. It is only a three-game sample size, but Fields is playing some of the best ball of his career and is easily in the driver's seat of the quarterback job in Pittsburgh.
Things did not go how Fields imagined them going in Chicago no way, but everything happens for a reason and the Buckeye is taking full advantage of what he currently has been dealt.
