Atlanta Falcons fans deserve better and they're not getting it under head coach Arthur Smith.
The Falcons (6-7), who are below .500, are still somehow in the playoff hunt — special thanks to playing in an overall terrible NFC South conference and not to Smith's coaching techniques.
Nonetheless, his job "is safe," according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler who reported Smith's hot seat status on Wednesday.
"The sense I get after asking around is that Arthur Smith is safe in Atlanta, barring a late-season collapse," Fowler writes.
When Smith first came to Atlanta in 2021, there was a lot to be excited about and a lot of hope in a potential franchise turnaround.
That's not the case for many fans anymore after back-to-back seasons finishing 7-10 and currently being barely on the cusp of a playoff berth.
However, Atlanta's four-game stretch looks winnable as they face the Carolina Panthers (1-12) in Charlotte on Sunday before hosting the Indianapolis Colts (7-6) and wrapping the season up on the road against the Chicago Bears (5-8) and New Orleans Saints (6-7).
But leave it to Smith and company to make it more complicated than it is.
What Smith's 2024 outlook as the Falcons' head coach appears to be right now is that if they win even just one more game, Smith will return to the sidelines next year.
And the only way that he wouldn't be back is if the Falcons end the season losing out.
Then again, Falcons owner Arthur Blank is a sucker for giving coaches and players one too many chances.
