FOXBOROUGH, Mass – To no one's surprise, Bill Belichick had an expected answer when asked about who will be the starting quarterback going into Sunday's game.
And many may not like his answer.
When asked if it would be Mac Jones, Belichick simply said, “Yeah, we’re not making any changes.”
This came after Belichick said on Sunday following the Patriots' 34-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints that the team is "starting over." However, that seems to be more directed towards the fundamentals.
Speaking with the media on Tuesday, Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien also explained that he expected Jones to be the starter. And now Belichick has confirmed this.
Following O'Brien's admission, the Athletic's Jeff Howe also reported that this is an "important week of practice" for Jones because the team is going to "evaluate every position on the roster on the heels of the worst two losses of Bill Belichick's career."
Howe further added that if Bailey Zappe had been able to give the offense a spark, the decision would be tougher for the coaching staff this week.
This has been a rough season for Jones, who has now been benched and replaced by Zappe during the last two weeks. And Sunday was especially rough after the Saints prevented the Patriots from getting anywhere near the end zone, ultimately shutting them out (at least they were able to get three points on the board against Dallas).
So it will once again be Jones in the pocket this weekend, however, this could be the final straw for the third-year quarterback depending on the outcome.
