Despite the negative noise this offseason surrounding Georgia's off-field concerns, there hasn't seemed to be any negative effect on their recruiting. In fact, unless something changes, it looks like Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs are primed to add yet another top four star defender this week.
Four star cornerback Jontae Gilbert, an elite talent from the Atlanta, Georgia area, will likely be committing to either Georgia or NC State this weekend. Gilbert narrowed things down to a final seven schools earlier this summer, and at the time Georgia wasn't even on the list. But as his commitment date has neared Georgia has worked their way back in.
Jontae Gilbert has been torn for a long time on where he wanted to play his college ball. With almost 40 FBS scholarship offers, Gilbert certainly had plenty of options. This time last year he was fresh of a decommitment from Ohio State, as many were surprised he changed his mind after a year committed to the Buckeyes. Ever since then it's been a battle among some of the nation's best programs to land him.
Gilbert brings excellent physicality to play press and make tough tackles, great length to break up passes, and has logged verified on-field speed over 20 miles an hour via multiple sources. On top of that he's been consistently asserting himself as one of the best 7-on-7 cornerbacks in the nation, consistently showing out at tournaments and other top recruiting circuit events.
But will he actually choose Georgia when it comes time to commit? It looks like the answer is yes. Gilbert continually comments on key Georgia players who have been going out of their way to recruit him (like four star running back Todd Robinson). Several key experts at multiple sites have logged official predictions to Georgia in the last few weeks. And Gilbert's comments emphasizing the importance of elite level success for him and his future team have many believing he's leaning toward the Bulldogs. Either way, we'll know where he's headed Saturday, August 10th in the afternoon.
